Mindfulness, Meditations and Wondrous Encounters

Each Wednesday during Lent we will have a “meager meal”of soup, salad, and bread in the social hall beginning at 5:30 p.m. Starting between 6:00-6:15 p.m. we will reflect on the daily meditations and  scriptures that Richard Rohr, a Franciscan friar based in New Mexico, sends each morning through email. The social hall get-together concludes a tad before 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend the liturgy or Taize service that follows at 7:00 pm in the chapel.

PART 1: Getting Involved in Our Lenten Daily Meditation Series

PART 2: The Wednesday Evening Meager Meal Discussion Based on the Daily Meditations

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

PART 1

  • Sign up for Richard Rohr’s Daily Meditations to be sent to your email: http://cac.org/sign-up

  • Select “Daily” emails and fill in the required information and begin receiving the daily reflection by Father Richard Rohr.

  • Begin reading the meditations and keep a journal of your thoughts.

  • Get a notebook and create a quarter-page, half-page or whole page for each day during Lent. Remember the more space, the more writing. A journal doesn’t need to be exhaustive. I’d recommend a quarter or half page. Pre-create the 40 days of journaling, starting with Wednesday, March 6 running all the way to Easter Sunday. You can take a rest from journaling on Sundays during Lent.

  • Here are the two questions I answer while journaling. (You can add more if you’d like.)

Question 1: What is the most important thing I read or thought during my experience?

Question 2: Why was this important to me?

  • If you are into a more substantive journaling experience, go to this link:

PART 2

  • Come to the church social hall as many Wednesdays at 5:30PM for the Meager Meal.

  • Sign up at least twice to bring soup, salad or bread for the meal, enough for half the attendees. That’s usually one crockpot of soup, about two bags of salad mix or two loaves of bread. Consult sign-up list to get an idea of what might be needed.

  • The session begins with the meal, then a brief presentation—usually an audio-video from Richard Rohr or recap of the meditations or readings from Wondrous Encounters.

  • We then break into smaller groups for guided discussion, followed by general sharing, some silent meditation and a closing prayer.

  • The series session ends at 6:55 pm, help with clean-up or move to chapel for the regular Wednesday evening liturgy or a Taize Service.
